IWASAKI NAGI : Artist Statement
In 2011, IWASAKI NAGI made "Declaration of New Primitive",
which defines our beloved 21st century.
So where does the concept originate from?
“The old age primitive movement", as known to the public,
derived from imperialism in 19th century.
The idea discovered "New lands" throughout the world,
where each and every one of them had its own culture.
“The new primitive", as he names it,
in fact comes from the social media site Facebook,
which is a perfect example of the shape of this democratic country.
It sees various cultures, living style, religions and believes.
It links every nation without harm,
and is even able to overcome difficulties so effortlessly.
Nagi notes that many people still love drawing and painting to this day.
Though, the contemporary art may not consider these styles
as part of main stream,
but it is the truth of what his sees and feels from his life experience.
So, he decides to paint such primitiveness based on his friends,
value in life, and belief.
And this is what "Declaration of the New Primitive" is all about.
He has chosen "HOPE" for his theme,
because sadness is always too depressing and usual to touch upon.
But hope is what we can establish nevertheless the place or time.
He wishes to reach out to you,
and say "For sure on this day,
we can declare our hope is limitless"
The New Primitive Declaration (新素朴派宣言)
Statement
From a giant windmill,
the ways of our modern day
blow strong as wind.
That wind is crying,
"Don't draw! Just think!
Think, and think well!".
And at the same time, a strange knight
rushes for the windmill.
He comes from the East,
with three old brushes
like Renaissance swords
he inherited and twelve watercolor paints
for a shield.
Even though we strain to make out his voice,
the wind groans on too loud to hear it.
Yet despite that distance,
we can recognize it:
he is stubborn. foolish, and on top of that,
a Japanese knight;
we know this right away.
He is, so to speak,
a "Samurai Don Quixote".
"IWASAKI, Nagi," this is his name.
And now a strong wind spreads out his flag
written in the Japanese sumi ink,
black capital characters we take in:
"NEW PRIMITIVE,"
the flag declares it (新素朴派).
岩崎ナギ・作家声明
岩崎ナギは２０１１年に「新素朴派宣言」を発布しました。
つまり我々の愛すべき２１世紀にです。
その宣言はどこから来たのでしょうか？
よく知られているように、
「旧時代における素朴派の潮流」は、
１９世紀の帝国主義から来ました。
それは独自の文化を持っていた、
「新しい土地」を世界中で発見して行きました。
しかし「新素朴」はフェイスブックから来るのです。
言うなれば我々の最も愛する民主主義からです。
それは異なる文化、様式、信念を容易に発見でき、
全ての国を害することなく結びつけ、
そんな困難は一跳びで跳び越してしまうのです。
そしてナギは現代美術の主たる流れが、
描いたり塗ったりする事に、
重きを置いていないけれど、
多くの人はまだ描いたり塗ったりする事を、
愛しているという事に気付いています。
そしてそれは彼自身の描いたり塗ったりする、
人生経験から考えてみても真実です。
だからそんな素朴なものを、
彼の友人や経験や信念から、
描くことに決めているのです。
そしてそれを「新素朴派宣言」と呼んでいるのです。
また彼は自分の主題を「希望」と定めています。
なぜなら悲しみというものはあなたに伝えるには、
いつもあまりにもありきたりのものだからです。
そして我々はどんな状況下からも、
希望を作り出す事ができるのです。
「今日こそ底抜けの希望を語ろう」と、
彼はあなたに伝えたいのです。
「新素朴派宣言」
巨大な風車から現代の強い風が吹いてくる。
「描くな！ただ考えろ！よく考えるんだ！」と、
その風は叫んでいる。
同時に奇妙な騎士が風車に突進する。
３本の古い筆をルネサンスの剣のように受け継ぎ、
１２色の水彩絵具を盾とし、
彼は東からやって来る。
彼の声を聴き取ろうにも、
風の唸りが強くて聴き取れない。
ただ距離がそこまで遠いにも関わらず、
我々は彼が馬鹿で頑固で、
そのうえ日本人の騎士である事がすぐ解る。
言わば「サムライ・ドン・キホーテ」だ。
「岩崎ナギ」それが彼の名前だ。
今ひとたび強い風が彼の旗を押し広げ、
日本の黒いインク「墨」で描かれ た、
彼の「大文字」が見て取れた。
「新素朴派」とその旗は伝える。
